Friday Finds: Shoo Fly!

via the Scholastic Store

Today I have to preface this post with a little story.

My son was helping me one day by carrying some bananas.  I should have known better, he just seemed to be extremely clumsy that day.  But I really needed a few more arms, what with carrying the girls in their car seats and a bag.   So we were headed to the car.  I made it to the car and looked back at my son who was recovering from a face plant onto the sidewalk. Sigh.  He got up and brushed himself off and handed me the bananas.  At the time the bananas didn't look too bad and I didn't really inspect them too much because it was a scorching day and needed to get everyone in the air conditioned car.  So, I got everyone home including the bananas.  I put everything away from the day, but I still did not look over the bananas very carefully.  Three days went by and my hubby came to me to ask, "did you know these bananas have fruit flies all over them?"  EWWW!  What?  Was my response.  I just got them.  So I inspected the bananas thoroughly this time to find little open spots in the banana peels.  My sons face plant had not only bruised the bananas thoroughly.  It had also opened up the bananas to invite nasty little flies into our home.  UGH!  I immediately threw the bananas out.  And washed down every surface in the kitchen.  But I knew doing that was not going to insure that the flies were going to vacate too.  So I concocted a trap for them.
A plastic water bottle filled with a intoxicating fly smell.  Rotting partially eaten strawberry and cider vinegar to invite the little pests in.  Complete with my rolled paper stuck in the top.  The point of the paper is super small to allow the flies in, but not allow them out.  Well, I suppose if they are super smart, they could get out.  But seeing how I have already caught 7, I don't think they are too smart.

So my Friday Find for the week is a fruit fly trap.  Shoo fly don't bother me or I will trap you forever!  MUAWWWAAWWWAAWWW.

What have you found today?
