C'Mon Drive Woman!

My husband would classify me as one who has 'road rage'.  So I looked up the definition of road rage.  On Dictionary.com it states, road rage "is a fit of violent anger by the driver of an automobile, especially one directed toward and endangering other motorists or pedestrians."  I really don't feel like I fit that category.  Because I have never ever endangered anyone on the road.  And 'fit of violent anger' just sounds so scary.  In my mind I picture Bilbo Baggins, from The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, where he turns into a monster when Frodo won't give the Ring back to him.  That definitely does not fit me.  But I probably have endangered myself more often than not with my blood pressure and stress level rising.    I am more like a 'annoyed easily driver'.

People must not have gone to the same drivers education program that I did.  I was taught by my teacher "ACCELERATE, ACCELERATE, ACCELERATE!!"  I suppose I could blame my lead foot problem on him.  Nah...definitely on my dad.  Now, I am not saying that I am the best driver in the world, but come on people.  Drive the speed limit!!!  I am one who drives 5 mph over the speed limit on most roads.  I know, breaking the law.  BUT, I do not have a problem driving the speed limit.  What I do have a problem with is people who drive 45 in a 55!!!  Yesterday would be my example.  Either the sweet white-haired lady in front of me needed new glasses to see that the sign read 55, or her muscles have atrophied so much that she can not push the gas pedal down enough to go 55, or she was talking too much to the other white-haired lady sitting next to her.  See I am trying to give her the benefit of the doubt.  But wow!  She needed to get off the road!  I was literally hitting the palm of my hand on my forehead saying "C'MON, DRIVE WOMAN!"  Geesh!  Do you ever feel like you need to stand out next to the speed limit sign with a sign that reads "YES, IT SAYS 55." "NOT 45."   Or do you wish you could pull people over for just being stupid?  I do.

I love my Grandma B., but she knows that I do not approve of her, little 88 year-old self, driving.  I think that once you pass a certain age you need to take a driving skills test.  Not just the written test.  For your safety and the safety of others!  I know I am talking about taking away ones 'freedom'  but what about safety and the sanity of those around you.  Because I feel like I go a little more insane with some of the drivers out on the road today.

  1. Selena, I think being physically abusive to your head while driving might meet the Bilbo Baggins requirement . . . but I agree. Mandatory driving tests every two years after the age of 80.
