You Are My Sunshine

Today's post is short and sweet.

Anytime you ask my son to sing, you can bet that he will sing "You Are My Sunshine".  He has been singing this song since the age of 2.  He is now 4.  I have always thought he was cute when singing it.  But now it has a whole new meaning to me.  My mom taught him this song.  And when my mom was in the hospital and 90% unresponsive, Merek came into the room and didn't miss a beat.  He went right up to the hospital bed and said, "Hey Meemaw!"  I asked Merek if he could sing Meemaw a song. And of course, without fail, he sang...

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.

You make me happy when skies are gray.

You'll never know dear, how much I love you.

Please don't take my sunshine away.

My  mom smiled and giggled.  She said, "Oh, hi Merek."

P.S. Warning...don't go and research this song.  The rest of the song is disturbing.   I would like to keep it sweet and innocent in my mind.  I never knew there were more verses to this song.  It makes me sad.  I bet now that I said not to research it, you will....

  1. I promise to not research it because the only version I want to hear in my head is Merek's. I miss you all and that boy!!

  2. Good! Don't! Miss you more than you could ever know. Or maybe it is I miss you more than I know how to express. The latter is probably the right answer. xoxoxo.

  3. Yes, it is a sad song. I became familiar with the whole thing through the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. Kinda wish I hadn't...That's sweet that your mom connected with Merek through that song.
